Nigerian students studying in private universities in Turkey has been said to benefit waiver of tuition fees that were to be paid before schools were closed down.

The Turkish government closed down private universities and other establishments operating in the country following last month’s failed coup in the country.

Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Hakan Cakil, stated this when he visited The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, in his office in Abuja.

Mr. Cakil, according to a statement issued by the ministry’s Deputy Director, (Press), Ben Bem-Goong, said Nigerian students in private universities in the country have been moved to public schools for them to continue their education.

“Following the coup attempt in Turkey which led to the closure of many private Universities, Nigerian students studying across Turkish private varsities which have been closed down have now been moved by the Turkish Government to public schools in that country where they will pay very little or no tuition fees at all,” the statement said.

EU to Intervene in Visa Problem for Nigerian Scholarship Awardees

The EU in Nigeria has promised to intervene in the visa procurement challenge faced by some Nigerian students on `Erasmus Plus’ Scholarship to some European countries.

The Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Richard Young, said this on Monday in Abuja at the pre-departure orientation for 17 awardees of the 2017 edition of the scholarship.

The students are scheduled to leave Nigeria in September for seven different countries -UK, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and France for two years academic programme.

Mr. Young explained that Erasmus plus was an initiative funded by the EU with international focus offering different higher education opportunities for individuals and institutions in partner countries.

According to him, it builds on the experience of more than 25 years of EU programmes in higher education and supports the exchange of students, academics, ideas and good practices between institutions.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some of the awardees lamented the delay and inability to secure visa for the two years programme from Spain, Netherlands, Italy and Portugal

Seven of the awardees had also expressed concern that they might miss the academic session because of the difficulties being encountered in securing visas from those countries.

Four of them said that they were having difficulties to secure Spanish visa while one each was having difficulties in securing visas from Italy, Netherlands and Portugal.

The envoy however pledged to wade into the issue and ensure that they travel as and when due for their programme.

He promised to write note verbals to the embassies of the affected countries to look into the visa procurement for those having issues in securing visa.

Mr. Young said that 17 students from Nigeria would join more than four million young people to acquire skill and experiences by studying, training or volunteering abroad though Erasmus plus.

“The programme supports over 125,000 institutions and organisations to work in peers in other countries to innovate, modernise teaching practice and youth work,” he said

The 17 students are from various Nigerian institutions among which are Federal University of Technology Akure, University of Abuja, Kwara State University, University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

Others are University of Ibadan, Yaba Technology, Lagos Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, University of Benin.

Nigerian defender, Timi Sobowale has completed his transfer to Manchester City.

Sobowale was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, having played for their U16s in a tournament in the Netherlands, but the Premier League champions have won the race for his signature.

City had extensively scouted Sobowale before handing him a contract.

The Citizens monitored Sobowale when the Republic of Ireland U15 national team faced Netherlands in a friendly back in February 2017.

”I’ve just started so this is my first season,” Sobowale told City’s official website.

“The rest of the guys have helped to make me feel really welcome. Everyone has been great.”

Sobowale will play for City’s U18 team in the 2018-2019 season

What Leicester City Boss Is Saying About Nigerian Striker Iheanacho

Leicester City manager, Claude Puel has hailed striker, Kelechi Iheanacho after the Nigerian international scored in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly game against Valencia.

Iheanacho netted from a close range in the 11th minute as the game eventually ended 1-1 after the normal regulation time.

The 21-year-old took his tally to two goals in his last two matches in pre-season, having scored against Udinese last weekend.

Puel, however, admitted that Iheanacho was still struggling to attain full fitness.

”I think Iheanacho came back with a good mentality, of course, he cannot play for a long time at the moment with good fitness levels,” Puel told Leicester City’s website.

”I’m happy about the mentality of the players. They’ve come back with a good spirit and with a fighting spirit.

”I’m happy about this, but we needed to make attention and protect them with rotation and to work on their fitness step by step.”

Iheanacho did not begin pre-season with The Foxes as he was given an extended break due to his commitments with the Super Eagles during the 2018 FIFA World Cup
